Guru Nanak, shah Fakir Hindu ka Guru,Muslman Ka Pir

At the time Guru Nanak there were two popular religion Hinduism and Islam. Bhagti was rooted in Hinduism and Sufism in Islam.Sufism based on Islam, bore signs of Hindu influence, and Bhagti rooted in Hinduism, carried an impress of Islam. But the constructive trends initiated by Bhagti and sufism recieved special stimulus from Shri Guru Nanak Dev JI. He took full cognisance of the situation in the country and his message was meant for both Hindus and Muslims.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev JI attain wisdom by practicing spirituality, humanity and religion by traveling world over forty thousand miles in forty years and interacting Sufis and Bhagats of those times. Traveling in those days was not easy as today. Guru Sahib's long and laborious journeys were not intended as pilgrimages, when means of modern conveyance were lacking.

He seems to have traveled to obtain personal acquaintance with as many recognized centers of spiritual life of both the religious as he could, and to spread his own message of Divine Unity and Truth to different sections of mankind. Guru Nanak Dev JI during his journey collected and preserved the hymns of Muslim Sufis and Hindu Bhagats to include in a single source of guidance to the entire mankind.

They never preached for Sikhism but there disciples were getting called as Sikh which means learner. Their motto was also humanism and spiritualism in the roots of their own religion of Sanatan Dharam in the purest form,as of Sikhism.

Guru Nanak:Na ko Hindu Na Muslman

Guru Nanak JI made an enlightening and revolutionary statement "Na ko Hindu Na Muslman"--Neither anyone is Hindu nor any Muslim, everyone is child of one GOD. When he said so,he was giving expression to the very search for human community that we are caught up today. His intention was asking men not to ignore religious belief in search for human community.Nor did he advice a kind of mixture of elements from all traditions so that men could accept some new religion without stress. He urged every man to penetrate more deeply into his own traditions to find within them to core of moral and spiritual truth, which is basic to all human religions. His intention was not to change man from one religion to another, fairly,he opposed the Religion conversions.

Guru Nanak Dev JI was the first teacher who endeavored to bring about a concord between votaries of different faiths. His life and teaching were a symbol of harmony between the communities and entire mankind at large.

The teachings of Guru Nanak is easily available through the Guru Granth Sahib JI, which not only include hymns of Guru Nanak but also other 6 Gurus of Sikh traditions. Moreover the Guru Granth Sahib JI also include hyms of Muslim Sufis and Hindu Bhagats. This is why the Guru Granth Sahib JI is Interfaith Guru. But this was possible due to Guru Nanak Dev JI who traveled mostly all asian countries i.e about 40 thousand miles in forty years and practiced Spirituality and Humanity during his journey. He came across various Saints and Sufis during his journey and collected there beliefs also.

This paper was presented by Sardar Nanak Singh Nishter at 3rd International Conference 2003 on Shri Guru Granth Sahib and Interfaith Understanding to World Peace on 3-5 December 2003 at Shri Amritsar Sahib .
